Sagi no Ongaeshi (a heron’s repayment of a kindness)
With 3,000 years of history, Dogo is said to be the oldest onsen (hot spring) in Japan. Thus, it comes with numerous tales. Masashi Asada created an 8-piece self-portrait, inspired by the legend that a white heron had dipped its injured foot into the Dogo Onsen and was healed. Eight different eras are depicted such as a visit from Prince Shotoku and the bustle of the Dogo Onsen in the present. It is a combined work filled with love for Dogo where the people who live in Dogo are the main characters in every era of the story and Masashi Asada, the bird-human heron watching over them.

Masashi AsadaPhotographer, born in Mie in 1979.
A published work of family pictures with himself as the object Asada-ke (Akaaka Art Publishing, Inc.) earned him the 34th Kimura Ihei Award. 2013~2014 he was part of the member of the Mie Prefectural Culture Council. In 2016 he was a judge for the government sponsored Iseshima Summit Photo Contest and has been working tirelessly on art projects that capture the life of people in Japan in different cities and towns, as well as public awareness campaigns. His main exhibits are “Tsu Family Land Asada Masashi shashin-ten” (2010: Mie Prefectural Art Museum/solo exhibition), “Hachinohe Review” (2011: Hachinohe Portal Museum “hatchi”), “Kinenbi wo tsukuru kinenshashin” (2011: Fukuoka Camera Museum/solo exhibit), “LOVE-ten” (2013: Mori Art Museum), “Kakucho suru Fashion-ten” (2014: Art Tower Mito, Marugame Municipal Inokuma Genichiro Modern Museum), “Hobo Kazoku” (2016: Irie Taikichi Memorial Museum of Photography Nara City/ solo exhibit) and “Hong Kong International Photography Festival” (2016: Hong Kong/ Invited as a foreign artist). Published works include NEW LIFE (Akaaka Art Publishing, Inc.), Kazoku Shimbun (Gentosha Literary Publication), Hachinohe Review (Bijutsu Shuppan-sha Co., ltd), Nanyo Shashin NANYO (Nihon Bungeisha), Sotsugyo shashin no shukudai (Akaaka Art Publishing, Inc.), Album no chikara (Akaaka Art Publishing, Inc.), and Minnade Minami Sanriku (Minami Sanriku Cho).The movie "Asada-ke (Asada family) (provisional)"will be released in 2020, which is a draft of his book "Asada-ke" and "Album no Chikara"(published by Akaaka Art Publishing Inc).
