On September 2nd a 1.5 ton, 3m tall bear of enormous proportions was placed in front of Shinro-tei for the public to view. It was created by Atsuhiko Misawa as an homage to the Dogo Zoo that was once in the park ground. The bear will forever watch over the main Dogo Onsen building with its overpowering presence.
One of Japan’s leading sculptors, Atsuhiko Misawa’s “Animal House in Dogo” will appear at Shinro-tei. A three-dimensional piece that is the image of Shinrokaku of the Main Building of Dogo Onsen with bronze animals and colorfully painted sculptures from the log of a camphor tree. The installation space will appear with ceramic white heron, yudama (bubbles in boiling water), and paintings. Close friends to the sculptor, artists Masato Kobayashi and Hiroshi Sugito, and fellow sculptor Katsura Funakoshi will make a friendship appearance and stay at Dogo during the production.
